How to Water Succulents the Right Way

The Golden Rule: Less Is More

Succulents store water in their leaves, stems, and roots. They are adapted to periods of drought — not constant moisture.

The Soak and Dry Method

Water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom of the pot. Then wait until the soil is completely dry before watering again. In summer this may be every 7–10 days; in winter, once a month is often enough.

Signs of Overwatering

Mushy, translucent leaves and a soggy stem at the base are early signs. Act quickly: remove the plant from its pot, let the roots dry for a few days, then repot in fresh, well-draining soil.

Best Soil & Pots

Use a cactus-and-succulent mix, or add perlite to standard potting soil at a 1:1 ratio. Always choose pots with drainage holes.
